From inception, Gospel Baptist Cathedral, Lagos was the source from which the church emanated under the leadership of Pastor Atilade. However, some of the members of the church pulled out due to the decision of the church leader to exercise herself from the Nigerian Baptist Convention and independently run a parallel convention called 'Gospel Baptist Conference'.
Amongst those that pulled out was Mr. Olanrewaju who started to gather more members/followers through house-to-house evangelism. In 1970, the number of them that were saved increased and they decided to start a fellowship at Mr. John Akintola's house.
On 22nd of April, 1973, they decided to move to Mr Opadejis house at no. 82, Baale Street, Orile Iganmu, Lagos which became a temporary worship centre. There, the first service was held as a church. The first sermon was preached by Mr. D. A. Olanrewaju. The total number of worshippers were nine (9) and the offering collected that day was ₦3.00 (Three naira only).
As the vision became broader, the church saw the need to have a permanent site for worship. Mr. D. A. Olanrewaju liaised with the land owner and bought the land in his name on 16th November, 1977. The church decided to refund the money for purchase of the land to him but he insisted that he voluntarily bought and gave the land to church and for church use.
On November 8, 1980, the church was formally organized through her sister church Obadiah Baptist Church, Mosafejo Amukooko, Lagos. The church completed her church building situated at 16, Ogungbesan Street, Coker, Orile Iganmu and dedicated it to the glory of God on 25th May, 1996.
